Cincinnati played a vital role in the Underground Railroad network, in part because of geography. Only a ribbon of water separated slave state from free. Cincinnati developed an important and protective enclave of abolitionists and fugitive slaves.
The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center celebrates the Underground Railroad's role with artifacts, interactive exhibits and discussion space for helping people sort through the emotions and link up with others.
The Freedom Center sits on the banks of the Ohio River in downtown Cincinnati. The $110-million facility features three pavilions, celebrating courage, cooperation and perseverance. The story of freedom is woven through the heroic legacy of the Underground Railroad and the American struggle to abolish human enslavement and secure freedom for all people.
Using the Underground Railroad as a lens through which to explore a range of freedom issues, the Freedom Center offers lessons and reflections on the struggle for freedom in the past, in the present, and for the future. And it helps visitors discover the power of one voice - shared with many - by speaking out about the meaning of freedom.
The Monday evening networking event will be held in "Everyday Freedom Heroes" hall overlooking the banks of the Ohio River from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, September 15th. Guests will have access to all exhibits on the third floor during the reception.
Please mark on your registration from whether you will be able to join us for that event.
